These men were exercising their right of free speech. I painted this from a candid photo I took, but changed various parts especially the background to create a dramatic and meaningful composition. The man holding the New York Times was not holding it, so I painted it in his hand to give him that New York West Side intellectual look. I especially enjoyed painting the transparency of his face in the shade and the textures of his clothing.
